Choosing a name for your male dog is an important task, a good name can help the responsiveness and communication between the dog and its owner so that there can be a better understanding,

Choosing A Male dog name

You want to pick a name that is easy to say (seems obvious), if you find it difficult then others will find it tricky and although you might not think this – your dog will struggle. So although it may seem funny to pick some long winded amusing name – that may not be the best idea.

There are various dog experts who recommend that when you pick a name for you dog that you pick something simple with at the very most one or two syllables. It has been proven that dogs find these names easier to recognise but you could still have a name that you use to communicate with your dog and a longer one if you wanted, maybe even look for a name that could be shortened.

You could pick a name based on how your dog looks, if it's a cute little dog you may want a cute name but I'm not sure that an Alsation would suit a name like ‘fluffy' for example. Is it a big dog, what color is the dog, do is it have any unusual features such as droopy eyes, spots, big ears, a long tail.

You should choose a name that will not be embarassing if you have to shout it in the park. Yep, it might have seemed funny at the time but if you have to run through the park and their are young kids and parents perhaps that amusing name with a double-meaning was not the best idea you had.

Try and avoid picking a name that will offend people – I can't say in this article but you should have a reasonable idea of what is a bad idea here. Politics, race and religion spring to mind as topics that should be avoided.

Avoid picking a name that can be mistaken for a command you would say to your dog – ‘sit' , ‘no' , ‘come here' and ‘good boy' are obvious things you would say so you may want to avoid a name that is quite close to some of these commands otherwise you may confuse your dog.

This is an important one but it's not a race to give your dog a name, get your dog home, let it acclimatise and get to know your dog a little better. You may rule out a name based on its personality if you just wait a little bit of time or even pick the ideal one.

Male dog ideas

There are many themes that come up for picking a name for your male dog and you probably will not be surprised to hear that some of these are inspired by various topics.

Movies – usually kids movies or animated movies like Frozen II which of course stars ‘Olaf' which has became popular recently, this would perhaps be a good name for a white dog. You can also use famous movie stars that have appeared in classic movies so how about ‘Clint', ‘Burt', ‘Dean' or ‘Heath'. The last one is topical at the moment.

Superheroes – Its probably best to go slightly off track and choose not the main superheroes so how about ‘Hulk' , ‘Thor', ‘Venom', ‘Stark' or ‘Joker' for some good examples. Not sure Hulk or Venom would appeal to any kids though.

TV – You could also consider famous dogs that have appeared in TV shows like Scooby but maybe not Scrappy and what about ‘Ghost' who was one of six direwolf pups that were found by the children of House Stark and was then adopted and raised by Jon Snow.

Sports stars – a lot of guys will go for their favorite sports stars name – so maybe ‘Kobe', ‘Jordan', ‘Pele', ‘Elton' but not sure about Tiger (that may be a little confusing, although quite funny admittedly)

Family members – You may have a deceased family member who had a name you liked, perhaps you could name your dog after them as a sort of tribute to their memory

Drink – I'm thinking alcohol here, so perhaps ‘Bud', ‘Miller', ‘Coors' would be unusual names for a dog.

Musicians – Have you got a favorite musician that you like, this can used as a source of some inspiration. Here are a couple of examples that I have come up with ‘Freddie', ‘David', ‘Sting', ‘Elvis' and ‘Prince'. You get the idea.

Colors – As I mentioned earlier you can name a dog after its color so for example if your dog was white you could call it ‘ghost', if it was light brown you could call it ‘Rusty'.

Training your dog to recognize its name

When it comes to actually training your dog to recognize its name then this is actually pretty easy and is just like an other training you would undertake. Here is an idea that you can use.

To begin with you should get your dog familiar with its name when its paying attention to you, when the dog responds you would reward it with a treat which can be an actual edible treat or simple praise or playing with your dog. You should repeat this a couple of minutes every day for a few weeks so it becomes second nature.

The next step is to take your dog out on its leash for a walk (an example) and then call their name, if the dog turns then thats great and once again you can rewartd them with a treat as above. If not then a little tug on the lead to get the dogs attention and then say their name to them directly.

At the start you should try and avoid saying things like ‘No, Scout' and just say ‘No'. If you say ‘No, Scout' then there is a chance that your dog will associate its name with negative situations, you want to avoid this – remember dogs are very intelligent animals.
